Rawan bint Najeeb Tawfeeqi, Minister of Youth Affairs, participated in a panel discussion organised by the Ministry of Youth Affairs as part of the Hope Network initiative, held on the sidelines of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Youth Forum.

The session focused on the impact of successful initiatives in strengthening youth leadership and preparing future leaders.

Minister Tawfeeqi emphasised the Kingdom of Bahrain’s belief that youth are the driving force behind sustainable development. She noted that the Ministry of Youth Affairs adopts a comprehensive scientific approach to identify and develop national talent, highlight their capabilities, and empower them to represent Bahrain in various international arenas.

She highlighted that youth empowerment programmes are carefully designed to develop young people’s potential and guide them towards leadership and excellence, enabling them to become role models and actively contribute to shaping a brighter future for the Kingdom.

During the session, Minister Tawfeeqi reviewed Bahrain’s pioneering experience in youth leadership development through the national project Lamea. She explained that the project follows a scientific method to guide young people through leadership-focused tracks and includes a series of assessments, challenges, and outdoor expeditions designed to strengthen their character.

She noted that the Lamea, managed by the programme’s alumni, plays an active role in designing and implementing the initiative, making it a replicable model for other regions. The programme, she added, supports sustainability and prepares graduates for leadership roles. By the end of 2024, over 70% of Lamea graduates had received job promotions or secured new employment, with five appointed as chairs of youth organisations and twelve joining boards of directors.

The session was opened with remarks from Felipe Paullier, UN Assistant Secretary-General for Youth Affairs, who underscored the UN’s support for the Hope Network and its alignment with global strategies to empower and upskill youth, urging more countries to join the initiative as a platform that inspires hope among young people.

Marina Walter, Deputy Regional Director of the UNDP Regional Bureau for Arab States, highlighted that the session reflects Bahrain’s firm commitment to youth empowerment. She said this commitment continues to inspire meaningful and practical action, adding that the session highlighted the role youth can play through inclusive and supportive policies. She reiterated UNDP’s support for initiatives and programmes that empower youth across the region.
